OPABIN recently completed a study of wetlands reclamation that included site visits to reclamation projects in Nova Scotia, Michigan, Utah and Florida. The study focused on the legislation and regulatory requirements of wetland reclamation, the standards applied to projects and the approach used to implement the regulatory framework.

The projects visited ranged from a very low level of regulatory oversight to highly regulated jurisdictions. Federal, provincial, state and local regulations were examined, including the requirements and standards that jurisdictions imposed on each of the projects. On the projects visited in the USA, differences in the approaches of applying the federal wetlands mitigation legislation and policies were noted.

Some excellent examples of wetland reclamation were observed along with the failures. Successful wetland reclamation was strongly associated good monitoring programs and adaptive management. Failed wetland reclamation was often associated with getting the hydrology wrong and failing to monitor and adapt to events as they occurred.
